The Best for the Eye

June 29th, 2009

An eyeglass prescription is a written order by an optometrist, ophthalmologist, orthoptist or an optician for eyeglasses. It specifies the refractive power to which the eyeglasses are to be made in order to correct blurred vision due to refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. It is typically determined using a phoropter, automated refractor, or through the technique of retinoscopy.Glasses (also called eyeglasses or spectacles) are frames bearing lenses worn in front of the eyes, normally for vision correction, eye protection, or for protection from UV rays.

Eyeglass frames are commonly made from metal or plastic. Lenses were originally made from glass, but many are now made from various types of plastic, including CR-39 and polycarbonate. These materials reduce the danger of breakage and weigh less than glass lenses. Some plastics also have more advantageous optical properties than glass, such as better transmission of visible light and greater absorption of ultraviolet light. There are many types of  Eyewear. But the Prescription Sunglasses must be confirmed by an ophthalmologist. The other typeof Sunglasses can be used according to the surroundings and our style.

Sunglasses may be made with either prescription or non-prescription lenses that are darkened to provide protection against bright visible light and, possibly, ultraviolet (UV) light. Photochromic lenses, which are photosensitive, darken when struck by UV light.

The eyeglasses are of many type like Corrective, Safety, Sunglasses, 3D Glasses, Reading Glasses. Bifocals, trifocals, progressive lenses and Extreme Magnification(Bioptics).

Nokia N86 Starts Shipping

June 11th, 2009

Nokia’s 8 MP N86 announced at the MWC at Barcelona earlier this year has started shipping globally.

The device features variable aperture, which results in vibrant photos even in challenging bright and low-light conditions. The fast mechanical shutter and Automatic Motion Blur Reduction ensure shorter latencies and less motion blur.

Processing times between pictures have been more than halved in comparison with many other camera phones.

The Nokia N86 8MP camera includes a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures, shorter latencies and variable aperture for super sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. A fast mechanical shutter will help ensure pictures with less motion blur. What could be construed as a disappointment would be the presence of  a dual LED camera flash instead of a Xenon.

The handset features -

* 2.6 inch OLED, scratch resistant hardened glass display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution

* Dual Slider

* 8GB of internal memory (microSD card support)

* HSDPA, Wi-Fi, EDGE

* Bluetooth with A2DP, USB 2.0 (micro)

* GPS with A-GPS support (Nokia Maps)

* FM radio with RDS and FM transmitter feature

* 3.5mm AV socket

* Rear kickstand

FaceBOOK!BEWARE

May 27th, 2009

Have you been hit like millions of Facebook users by a new phishing scam that can result in crashing your computers or mobile phones and steal your passwords? If not, beware, do not open the files ending with ‘.at’ or ‘.be.’

The phishing scam is being run through the spam messages which steals the sensitive information of the Facebook users. In the attack, the messages are circulated with a subject line of ‘Hello’ and a prompt to check out areps.at or other URLs ending in ‘.at.’

The mails with the subject line Look at This and links like — goldbase.be, greenbuddy.be, silvertag.be, picoband.be — leads to some malicious Web sites, which if visited, could secretly download malware onto computers through a drive-by download application.

The URL connectivity, before being blocked directs the visitor to a fake Facebook page and the mail ID and password are stolen as soon as it is logged-in again.

According to the All Facebook blog.Facebook, the password in such cases should be changed immediately and the same message should be sent across to one’s Facebook acquaintance.

‘Whoever is behind the scam has been steadily amassing a large number of e-mail addresses and passwords over the past few weeks,’ the blog says.Though, Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said: ‘The impact of this attack or the previous ones are not widespread and only impacted a tiny fraction of a per cent of users.

‘We’ve been updating our monitoring systems with information gleaned from the previous attacks so that each new attack is detected more quickly,’ he said.

The site has blocked links to the new phishing sites from being shared on Facebook and has added them to the block lists of the major browsers.

The social networking site is working with partners to have the sites taken down completely, he said adding Facebook is also cleaning up phony messages and wall posts and resetting the passwords of affected users.

‘We believe the bad guys here are phishing an account and then trying those credentials on webmail providers,’ Schnitt said.

So, for example, if a user is compromised on Facebook and has the same login and ID password for their Gmail, the attacker may be able to intercept the Facebook password reset and compromise the account again in the future, he added.

Microsoft’s layoff email to employees

May 10th, 2009

below is the copy of Mail sent by the CEO of Microsoft

From: Steve Ballmer

Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009

To: Microsoft - All Employees

Subject: Update: Realigning Resources and Reducing Costs

In January, in response to the global economic downturn, I announced our plan to adjust the company’s cost structure through spending reductions and job eliminations. Today, we are implementing the second phase of this plan.

This is difficult news to share. Because our success at Microsoft has always been the direct result of the talent, hard work, and commitment of our people, eliminating positions is hard.

Today’s action includes positions in the United States and in a number of countries around the world. In the US, affected employees will be notified directly by their managers today. In other countries, local leadership teams will provide more specific information about the impact to their organizations.

With this announcement, we are mostly but not all done with the planned 5,000 job eliminations by June 2010. We are moving quickly to reach this target in response to consistent feedback from our people and business groups that it’s important to make decisions and reduce uncertainty for employees as quickly as possible, and so that organizations can concentrate their efforts and resources on strategic objectives.

As we move forward, we will continue to closely monitor the impact of the economic downturn on the company and if necessary, take further actions on our cost structure including additional job eliminations.

For those of you directly affected by today’s announcement, I want to thank you for your contribution to Microsoft and assure you that we will continue to provide support as we did during the previous job eliminations.

And for everyone across the company, I want to reemphasize how much I appreciate the way you have pulled together to help the company respond to this difficult economic environment. There’s no doubt that these are very challenging times. But together, we are making the right choices to ensure that we will continue to deliver great products and position ourselves for strong future growth and profitability.

Thank you for your continued hard work, commitment, and focus.

Steve

Return my Gandhi

March 14th, 2009

New Delhi: US collector who has now decided not to part with the Gandhi memorabilia he had earlier put on auction states his reasons for the retraction.

James Otis now wants Antiquorum Auctioneers, the New York auction house to return the particular items of the Mahatma that it had sold for $1.8 million in a controversial auction.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, Otis said, “I understand in India elections are approaching so they (the sale of the Gandhi memorabilia) are being used in all sorts of confusing, political ways. I don’t feel Gandhiji will ever be proud of it.”

Otis had placed Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic round eye glasses and other personal belongings -pocket watch, sandals, eyeglasses, bowl and plate under the auctioneer’s hammer,

The memorabilia had been purchased by Indian business baron Vijay Mallya, after India numerous attempts to have the auction called off failed. Mallya is widely lauded for saving national pride by bidding for the items.

As a first step, Otis can notify Antiquorum Auctioneers that the sale is null and void as conditions under which he had put the items for auction no longer exist.

“I believe it’s my right as a legal owner of these items. What’s going on is dividing the country,” said Otis to CNN-IBN.

Otis’s ratification of the sale will be vital as without it the auction house can only turn over the possession to the buyer but not the title of ownership.

Otis had withdrawn his sanction to the sale but the auction house had gone ahead.

However, the Mahatma’s descendant and great grand son Tushar Gandhi has called the actions of Otis as outrageous.

Calling Otis the greatest fraud, Tushar Gandhi said that Otis must mind his own business . He also added that Otis and his professor were only seeking more money and were partners in crime.

We will put India on world map

March 9th, 2009

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working to put the country in the forefront of space technology, Project Direcor-Chandrayan-I, ISRO, Myilsamy Annadurai, has said.

Speaking at a function in Trichy, Annadurai said India had the largest domestic satellite communication system using INSAT and GSAT covering four major components Broadcasting, Communication, Meteorological and Development Activities.

While broadcasting satellite was used for beaming television programmes, meteorological satellite was meant for weather forecast and warning.

The development component had uses in tele-education and telemedicine while communication satellite was meant for economic development activities like linking ATM networks, he added.

He said telemedicine and tele-education concepts were being implemented through village resource centres across the country. Under the telemedicine concept,there were 276 hospitals interlinked across the country.

The telemedicine concept proved a great success and was useful in the North East Region, Andhaman Nicobar Islands and Jammu and Kashmir. About three lakh people of these areas were expected to benefit under the telemedicine concept, he added.

Under tele-education, 30,000 classrooms across the country were interlinked. ISRO’s earth observation application system was meant for development of agriculture, information on forest fire, water resources, land fertility, weather, climate, ocean and providing disaster warning to fishermen.

Under the Rajiv Gandhi National Dinking Water Mission, the ISRO was entrusted with mapping drinking water resources in 2,400 places of which the ISRO had so far completed mapping 2,000 places across the country benefiting about two lakh habitations.

Referring to the Chandrayan I Moon Mission, he said the mission comprised three stages— launching,landing and getting resources from the moon. ‘Now, we are in the first stage,’ he added.
